"Stree Shakti Canteen at Delhi Secretariat celebrates first anniversary" - August 3, 2010

The Stri Shakti Canteen was inaugurated on August 3, 2010. Stri Shakti, an NGO which has also been running a GRC, is helping to empower women by providing them livelihood opportunities and utilising their skills and abilities in running the cafeteria. The space has been provided to them by the Delhi Government at the Secretariat. The canteen establishment, started as a pilot project by the government is an innovative business model for engaging the services of women groups from the marginalized sections of society. The rates were fixed by a Management Committee and the partners were selected through a technical bidding process that was open to all the 80 GRCs across Delhi.

Stri Shakti, one such organization, had previously been part of the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) program of the government. They were supplying nutrition and employing SHGs of women in this framework of the ICDS program. So ultimately, the selection criteria for managing the organization were based not on price, but on the quality and organizational ethos.

The General Administrative Department (GAD) is the Administrative Department and the contract is at two levels:
                i) Between GAD and Samajik Suvidha Sangam (SSS)
ii) Between SSS and Stri Shakti

The Stri Shakti cafetaria at Delhi Secretariat is an entirely women managed enterprise and is beneficial for them as it helps the women gain self-esteem and a support network. They gain buoyancy and feel empowered as they are able to supply a quality product and generate livelihood for themselves.
